WHAT TO DO IN KIPPFORD & SURROUNDING AREAS.

Kippford Bay Caravan Park, Kippford is perfectly placed for exploring the Scottish Solway Coast and is within easy reach of many small towns including Kirkcudbright, Castle Douglas and Dalbeattie.

The village of Kippford, popular for sailing is one of Scotland’s prettiest seaside villages on the shore of the estuary of the River Urr.  The waterfront is lined with pretty, whitewashed cottages, shops and cafes, and from here, you can walk along the shore road to the beautiful beaches. Kippford is home to the Solway Yacht Club who hold a sailing regatta here annually. Beyond Kippford is the “Muckle”, a forest with a network of paths that lead you to Rockcliffe.

The village also has two pubs serving local ale and food, a chandlery and slipway, a village hall, a gift shop which also sells coffee, cake and ice cream, a family-run craft pottery and a family-friendly nine-hole golf course and tea room.

Golf Courses

There are 3 excellent golf courses very close to Kippford Bay Caravan Park, including: Craigieknowes, Colvend, and Dalbeattie golf course. Craigieknowes is nine-hole, par three golf course, being short yet challenging at the same time, it is ideal for beginners and testing enough for more experienced players. Colvend, is a testing 18-hole parkland course is situated on the Solway Coast with many of the holes offering challenging water features and tree lined fairways with well-guarded greens and undulating fairways. Dalbeattie golf course is a delightful 9-hole parkland course providing a challenge for golfers seeking an enjoyable golfing experience all year around. Set in superb countryside with spectacular coastal views these local courses offer you the chance to play at various handicaps suitable for a range of abilities, from beginners to the more experienced players. Within a short distance, there are numerous golf courses in Galloway and South Ayrshire allowing you to play as a member or as a visitor. In the Rhins of Galloway, there are two of the Top 100 Courses of Scotland, Portpatrick, Dunskey which has a clifftop setting and offers spectacular views across the Irish Sea and Creachmore, Stranraer on the shores of Loch Ryan.

Mersehead Nature Reserve

Situated on the scenic north shore of the Solway coast, Mersehead boasts a wide variety of different habitats and wildlife from barnacle geese in the autumn and winter and lapwings and natterjacks toads in the spring and summer. You might also see a roe deer.

In the Autumn thousands of barnacle and pink-footed geese start to arrive for the winter, creating a not-to-be-missed spectacle. Mersehead Nature Reserve is a stunning example of freshwater wetland habitats, set adjacent to wide expanses of intertidal sand and mudflats wetlands, woodland, inter-tidal sandflats, farmland and of course a fabulous beach.

Mersehead is an extensive wetland and saltmarsh area, a haven for breeding waders, wintering waterfowl and year-round bird and wildlife-watching. Discover the breath-taking scenery and wildlife that’s typical of this region.

Dalbeattie Forest

Dalbeattie is one of several beautiful forests around the Solway Coast. Close to Dumfries, there are tree-lined hills and glens. It’s just a few miles to Palnackie and the soaring Doach Wood where you’ll find some of the tallest trees in south-west Scotland. Pretty Plantain Loch is a real highlight in this quiet, easy to explore forest beside the town of Dalbeattie. The trails here are short but steep, rewarding your efforts with stunning views of the Solway coast. The 7stanes are world-class mountain biking centres that span the south of Scotland. Their award-winning trails offer some of the best mountain biking in the country and attract riders from all over the UK and beyond. It is also a perfect place for walking and hiking, with trails following graded paths so you can find one that’s just right for you. All trails have clear signs so you can follow the route even if you’ve never visited the forest before.
